  • A father of two has died while on the school run, after two cars carrying members of the same family crashed into a river.
The 42-year-old was driving his 11-year-old daughter on the school run along a bridle path which runs near the Monsal Trail, north of the A6 in Derbyshire, when their car veered off the path and into the River Wye.

A second car, driven by his 39-year-old wife and also carrying their nine-year-old son, was travelling just behind them before it also careered off the path and into the water.

The 42-year-old died after he could not be rescued from his car (left). The children and his wife who was driving the car on the right managed to escapeEmergency vehicles and personnel, including Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service, local mountain rescue volunteers, land ambulances, and the air ambulance were called to the scene
Derbyshire Police said the two children and their mother managed to escape unhurt from the cars.
But despite desperate attempts by local residents, the father could not be saved and died a short time later.
Both the mother and father were taking their children to school when the tragedy happened just after 8.30am this morning.

A police spokeswoman said the children and their mother managed to safely get out of the vehicles and get to the shore.
Locals waded into the river to try to help free the man from the Toyota Aygo and when police arrived on the scene an officer also plunged into the water to try to aid the rescue attempt.
Emergency vehicles and personnel, including Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service, local mountain rescue volunteers, land ambulances, and the air ambulance, attended to take all four passengers to hospital.

Police said the man later died at Stepping Hill Hospital.
No names of the family members involved have yet been released and identification is expected to take place tomorrow.

The force spokeswoman added: 'Officers remain at the scene this afternoon and an investigation has been launched.'
Police investigators said it was too early to say whether the snowy and icy conditions in the area were a contributing factor in the accident.
But flood warnings have been issued across the UK as snow and ice starts to melt, and ice warnings are also in place across much of Britain today as snowfall continues to cause disruption on the roads.
Temperatures are set to increase from below freezing to as warm as 9C at the weekend after the last of the snowfall heads north tomorrow.
But as the snow subsides, forecasters are predicting heavy rain and warn the milder temperatures will thaw the snow, causing flooding in parts of the country by the end of the weekend.
Meanwhile the treacherous weather has claimed its latest victim after a 23-year-old man was discovered dead in his snow-covered car after veering off the M4 into a ditch where it is thought he could have spent up to six days.
